National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC)

.

Introduction

Malaysian Antarctic Research Programme (MARP) was initiated by the Malaysian cabinet directive in 1996. A taskforce was established by the Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM) to initiate and sustained Malaysian Antarctic research. As part of the taskforce initiative, the National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC) was established in cooperation with the Universiti Malaya (UM) and was officially inaugurated by the then Minister of Science Technology and Innovation, YB Dato' Law Heng Deng in 5th of August 2002. An MoU between ASM and UM was signed in 2010.  UM currently host the NARC at its premises. NARC serves as a centre to coordinate the research activities of the members of the MARP. In 2018, Yayasan Penyelidikan Antartika Sultan Mizan (YPASM) took over the ASM’s roles, duties and responsibilities on MARP and National Antarctic Research Centre (NARC).

The aim for the establishment of NARC is to spearhead Malaysia’s involvement in Antarctic and Arctic sciences in particular in polar research. NARC represents Malaysia in the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and Asian Forum for Polar Sciences (AFoPS).
