The event was held on 8th December at the UM Research & Innovation Management Complex. Prof. Dr. Noor Hayaty Abu Kasim (Penyandang Ke-3 Kursi Tun Dr. Siti Dr. Hasmah) presented her research entitled "Assistive Device Technology for Independent Living and Active Aging"
The aim of this research project is to develop a smart hand held device, using the cutting edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques to cater for people with physical and cognitive impairments. In particular, it is going to investigate methods to guide a person towards an object and receive information about the object, automatically. The smart device is standalone and will contain a database of known objects in their homes. The feedback, information about the object, from the handheld device is delivered as audio. Beside that, this research project will also create a software using computer vision techniques – mimicking human vision to locate a tagged object situated in their homes. It is believed that the output of the project will improve the quality of life for the elderly population.
